The Voice That Knows Everything
The science calls them auditory hallucinations. The people who live with them describe something else — a voice that is powerful, that knows everything, and that will not be disobeyed.
In this study, thirty patients with chronic schizophrenia were asked not whether they heard voices, but what they believed about them. The answers were strikingly consistent. The voices were experienced as malevolent — out to harm. And they were experienced as omnipotent: all-powerful, all-knowing, aware of everything happening inside the person, and to be feared if disobeyed.
Notice what that is. Not a random misfiring of the brain the patient shrugs off, but a presence with a will — one that persecutes, that claims to know all, that demands obedience. The people who hear it are not confused about its character. They resist it. They try to make it leave.
Scripture has a category for a voice like that. It does not tell us to trust every voice that speaks in the dark. It tells us to weigh them — because not every spirit that speaks is from God.
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
The researchers measured what the patients believed. They did not ask the older question — whether the voice might be something more than a symptom. That is the question this ministry keeps asking. The signs are all around us.
