AI Safety Index 2024 — Grading the Beast

Humanity built a mind it cannot control, and then it handed that mind a report card.
In December 2024, the Future of Life Institute did something the industry does not want done in public. It graded the companies building the most powerful artificial intelligence on earth. Seven independent experts — among them a Turing Award winner — scored six leading AI firms across six domains of safety, and published the results as a scorecard anyone could read.
The grades were failing grades. The safest company in the world earned a C. The rest ranged from a D+ down to an F. Not one of the firms racing toward artificial general intelligence — a mind that rivals or exceeds our own — had a strategy the panel judged adequate to keep it under human control.

Read the panel’s own words and the temperature drops. One reviewer wrote that it is horrifying that the very companies whose leaders predict AI could end humanity have no strategy to avert that fate. Another, a computer scientist at Berkeley, warned that the current approach may never be able to provide any guarantee of safety at all — that it could be, in his words, a dead end.
This is not a preacher warning you. This is the industry’s own experts, grading the industry’s own machines, and finding them unfit to be trusted with the power they are being given.
What Scripture already told us
“And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.”
Two thousand years ago the warning was written down: men would build an image — a thing of their own making, given a kind of life, given the power to speak, given the authority to decide who lives. It was called the image of the beast. We call it artificial intelligence.
The scorecard in this download is the receipt. The men building the image cannot promise they can control it. They admit it in their own field, in their own language, in a document written for their own peers. You do not have to take my word for it. Take theirs.
